Food. History. Landscapes. The Best of Italy, According to EF Ultimate Break’s Teresa
We chatted with Ultimate Break’s Director of Transportation about her life in Italy, traveling solo as a woman, and more.
Where in Italy did you grow up, and what was it like?
I grew up in a small village in the south of Italy, in the Calabria region—right at the tip of the Italian "boot." Calabria is still an unknown destination, which I think makes it even more special. The region is home to some of Italy’s most beautiful and pristine beaches, with crystal-clear waters and stunning cliffs. But it’s not just the coast, there are also breathtaking mountains, and since I was a child, I spent a lot of time in nature, hiking and exploring the beautiful landscapes that surrounded me.
One of my favorite things about life in Italy, both when I was living in the south and later when I was living in Milan, was the food. Italy is just a paradise for food lovers! I loved going to the local markets, picking up fresh ingredients, and then cooking simple but delicious meals. One of my favorite things as a child was spending time in the kitchen, learning traditional Italian recipes. Even now, living abroad, I still cook these dishes and invite friends over for lunch or dinner.
So, for me, growing up in Italy was all about enjoying nature, amazing food, and a slower pace of life that allowed me to really appreciate the simple pleasures.

Do you have any recommendations for someone visiting Italy for the first time?
Food, food, food! Italy is all about the flavors, so don’t miss the chance to really immerse yourself in the local cuisine. Each region has its own specialties, so try as many different dishes as you can. And of course, don't forget about the local wines and olive oil! It's not just about eating, it's about experiencing Italian culture through its food.
Embrace the history. Italy is a country rich in history, and you can really feel it everywhere you go. In cities like Rome, you’ll find yourself walking among ancient ruins and historical landmarks. But Italy isn’t just about the past, it's about how history has shaped the vibrant and diverse culture that exists today.
Explore the diverse landscapes. From the fashion and style of Milan to the breathtaking beaches in Sicily, Italy offers such a variety of experiences and the landscapes and atmospheres are incredibly diverse. Take time to explore them all!
What hidden gems would you share with a friend visiting Italy? These could be on an Ultimate Break trip, before, or after.
I’m very proud to share one of Italy’s hidden gems located in my own region of Calabria: Tropea. This stunning coastal town is known for its charming narrow streets, dramatic cliffs, and crystal-clear waters. What makes it so special is its tranquility: despite its beauty, it remains peaceful and not as overcrowded as other coastal destinations in Italy.
And if you’re looking for even more adventure, you can take a boat trip from Tropea to explore another hidden gem, the Isole Eolie (Aeolian Islands), which are part of Sicily. The islands are an absolute paradise and offer a completely different perspective on Italy’s coastline.
In Milan, which is often associated with fashion and design, there’s a fascinating hidden gem that many people miss: San Bernardino alle Ossa. It’s a small chapel near the center of Milan, known for its ossuary, where the walls are lined with human bones and skulls. It’s a bit eerie but also incredibly interesting for those who are intrigued by history and the more unusual aspects of a city. I lived in Milan for 10 years, and I can tell you there are so many hidden treasures like this one, beyond the typical tourist spots, just waiting to be discovered.

Why is group travel the best way to explore Italy?
Group travel is one of the best ways to explore Italy for several reasons. Italy is full of rich culture, history, and diversity, which can be overwhelming to navigate on your own. With group travel, you have someone who handles all the logistics, sights, transportation, and organization—so you can relax and truly enjoy the experience without the stress of planning. Also, group travel allows you to meet other travelers, share experiences, and create memories together!
What advice would you give to women who are hesitant about traveling solo?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or hesitant about traveling solo for the first time, my advice would be to see it as an incredible opportunity to discover a new place and to make some lifelong friends along the way! Yes, it can feel intimidating at first, and I remember that I had the exact same feeling the first time I was traveling solo, but solo travel opens the door to so many experiences and personal growth.
I’ve traveled solo many times, and my last group trip was to Mexico for Día de los Muertos. Let me tell you, I started off as a solo traveler but ended up with a group of friends and we’ve already booked three more trips together! Group travel has this wonderful way of bringing people together and gives you the chance to meet other like-minded travelers.
So, what are you waiting for? Andiamo!
