Navigating Venice Like a Pro: Public Transport Tips From Ultimate Break
One of the great joys of travel is mastering public transportation in a new city—plus, it’s not just environmentally responsible, it’s also practical and budget-friendly.
Getting Around Venice: A City Built for Boats and Foot Traffic
Venice is one of the most unique cities in the world when it comes to transportation. Why? Well, there aren't any cars. Whether by boat or on foot, the entire city is designed for exploration. The best way to get around? A mix of walking and hopping on Venice’s iconic public transit system—the Vaporetto.
Venice is perfectly flat, safe, and endlessly fascinating to walk, but when you want to cruise the canals, the Vaporetto is the way to go.
Your Entry Points to the City
For those traveling with Ultimate Break, your gateway to Venice is likely to be Piazzale Roma (the bus terminal) or Venezia Santa Lucia Train Station, both of which are located at the edge of the city’s main island.
Our Plus tours often stay in Tronchetto, a western district of Venice with several convenient public transit connections. The easiest option? Venice’s People Mover, an automated, elevated shuttle that takes you from Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma in just 90 seconds. From Piazzale Roma, you can hop on Vaporetto Line #1, the most famous and scenic public transit route in the world. Our Essential tours typically stay in Mestre, on the mainland. From here, a quick train ride across the causeway takes you straight to Santa Lucia Train Station, where you’ll also have access to Vaporetto Line #1.
Vaporetto Line #1: The Ultimate Scenic Route
The Vaporetto (think of it as a bus-boat) is the best way to see Venice while getting where you need to go. Line #1 runs the entire length of the Grand Canal, stopping at many of the city's most famous landmarks before heading into the Venetian Lagoon.
